UN agency helping Sri Lanka's war widows

The Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Kandeh K. Yumkella has said Friday that his agency is helping to provide employment to the women widowed during the three-decade long war in Sri Lanka.

In an effort to industrialize the country, especially the war-torn North and East, UNIDO in corporation with the Sri Lankan government is promoting small- and medium-size industries to provide employment and economic empowerment to some 40,000 war widows in the region.
According to a United Nations news report, UNIDO is supporting technology transfer and value addition projects to small- and medium-size industries in Sri Lanka.
Yumkella, who is on a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka at the invitation of the government, says UNIDO is also supporting Sri Lanka to develop renewable energy sources.
