Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Ministry has said that while it hoped to provide electricity to all households in the country by 2012, it would take the necessary measures to introduce a consumer, energy and environment friendly electricity bill. Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told the media yesterday (1) that the Ministry has formulated a short, mid and long term plans to make a self sufficient power and energy sector in Sri Lanka.
The Ministry has formulated a six-month short term plan; a five-year middle term plan and a 30-year long term plan.
Ranawaka has also noted that a new tariff system that goes hand-in-hand with energy conservation and affordability would be introduced shortly in consultation with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).
The general public is to be given an opportunity to air their views and give suggestions to the PUCSL when the new tariff system was being formulated.
