Sri Lanka's monk party changes its leadership amidst controversy

The Sinhala nationalist party Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), a constituent party of the governing United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), has run into controversy over the new appointments made to senior posts in the party.

JHU Leader Ven. Ellawela Medhanandha Thero has been replaced by Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thero at the party convention held yesterday (19) at the New Town Hall in Colombo.
The appointment of the new party leader has reportedly taken place without the consent of Ven. Medhanandha Thero.
Ven Medananda Thero has been quoted in the local media claiming that he had not stepped down from the party leadership. However, he said that he would wish the party all the very best in its future endeavors.
JHU spokesperson Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe meanwhile has claimed that the former leader had stepped down from the post.
Ven. Athureliye Rathana Thero was named as the Chairman of the JHU and Minister Champika Ranawaka, as the General Secretary.
