Sri Lanka 's major opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayaka today questioned the logic behind the appointment of former chief city administrator of Colombo as the new special commissioner to handle affairs of the dissolved Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).
While addressing a meeting held in Colombo today, MP Karunanayaka pointed out that the former chief city administrator Omar Kamil was also a stakeholder of corruption charges the government frames against the governance of the Colombo Municipal Council.
The Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council (WPC) recently dissolved the Colombo Municipal Council citing corruption and the administrative powers were vested in a special commissioner.
The WPC came to this decision following receiving reports of two commissions appointed to investigate allegations leveled against the Municipal Council regarding financial irregularities. The Chief Minister said that a special commissioner will be appointed to carry out the administration of the Colombo Municipal Council until further notice.
UNP MP Ravi Karunanayaka urged the government to hold elections for the Colombo Municipal Council.
