A former soldier of LTTE, now Sri Lanka’s only Tamil Chief Minister is visiting India to learn about running local self Government.
Sivanesathurai Chanthirakanthan is commonly known as Pillayan, stressed that he will be happy to learn important lessons that will help improve his administration in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.
The 34 year old leader reached Thrissur in Kerala and will be attending workshops on Panchayati Raj and governance at the grassroots level. He will be attending these programs for a week.Pillayan claimed that one of his Government’s aims is to strengthen provincial Government in his province. He also wanted to study the system in Kerala which he felt will provide valuable lessons for his administration.
He is heading a 30-member Eastern Province delegation that includes other members from his own Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) party.
As a part of this initiative, 90 provincial council members and their aides will visit Kerala in three batches. The other people will be from President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, the United National Party, the All Ceylon Muslim Congress apart from a faction of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front.
Pillayan pointed out that his party wants to work for strengthening the unity of Sri Lanka. He also wants to improve the life of his own people.
