India did not force to sign CEPA, says Sri Lanka Minister of External Affairs
Sri Lanka Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris stressed that there was no pressure from India to sign the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
He pointed out that the President had not inked CEPA during his official tour in India despite some were skeptical about the matter.
The Minister said that three years ago while visiting Sri Lanka Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said that the South Asia should prosper through the economic growth of India. However, the Indian Premier was on the view that Sri Lanka needed to do that on its own pace and the stance is still unchanged.
Addressing media to explain the outcome of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Indian tour, the Minister highlighted that India pledged US $ 1.25 billion aid for development projects. He pointed out that it was a massive corporation with Sri Lanka.
