Head of the UN Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka has expressed regret at the Sri Lankan government's decision to deny panel members entry into the country. Head of the panel, former Indonesian Attorney General Marzuki Darusman has told BBC that it was "most unfortunate."
"Everybody loses out if we cannot go to Sri Lanka. It will make it harder for the truth to be unearthed," he has said.
Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris yesterday told the Sri Lankan media that there was "no need" for the panel to come to the country and they would not be allowed in.
The UN however, says the Panel doesn't need to go to Sri Lanka.
Darusman was a member of an international team appointed to observe proceedings on a previous Sri Lankan commission on atrocities, but resigned later saying the commission did not meet basic minimum standards.
