The Defence Ministry has been directly involved in the killing of beggars, reliable sources said. A selected few persons had been assigned to the task and the first phase is to clear the areas of Colpetty, Bambalapitiya, Slave Island and other areas in Colombo 7 of beggars.
Getting rid of beggars in the city of Colombo has been the first step in the Rajapaksas move to make Sri Lanka the wonder of Asia. Although a large number of beggars were cleared from the city, many have managed to return. Attempts by the group to chase away the beggars to other areas had also failed.
It had finally been decided to incite fear among the beggars in order to get them out of the city by killing a few of them. Sources said that a high ranking official in the defence establishment had ordered the special unit to some how get rid of the beggars in the city.
Therefore, the group that is affiliated to the underworld had taken steps to kill beggars by smashing their heads with heavy rocks.
Sources from the police said that although a person had been arrested in connection with the murders, legal action has not been instituted against him.
It is now clear that the murder of beggars has not been due to a conflict between beggar mudalalis as claimed by the police.
The Slave Island police OIC has reportedly said that eight beggars have so far been killed in the city.
