The college comedy film “3 Idiots” swept a low-key award ceremony in Sri Lanka on Saturday night amid protests from several of the country’s Tamil groups according to Yahoo News. The film won nearly 17 trophies including major awards that included Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.The film was a heart-warming tale of life in an Indian college and was a Bollywood blockbuster last year. Many of the major actors and actresses from the film stayed away from the event after Tamil groups in India protested the event being held in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. Tamil groups in Sri Lanka have alleged government mistreatment of their people. The threats and protests were not enough to keep Kareena Kapoor away who won the Best Actress award for her role in the film.
Sri Lanka’s government spent nearly $4 million preparing to host the event and was hoping for a smooth outing that would shed a positive light on Sri Lanka.
