11 prisoners escape from a court cell in Sri Lanka


Ten prisoners and a suspect held under special custody have escaped while being detained in the temporary cell at a Magistrate's Court in Sri Lanka Monday.

Prisons Commissioner Major General V.R De Silva told the local media that a group of 11 prisoners had escaped by breaking open the holding cell in the Maligakanda Magistrate's court.
One of the suspects has been arrested minutes later.
The prisoners and the suspect were being held under special custody for their alleged involvement in several grave criminal activities.
The authorities have brought 18 suspects who were held for various criminal charges to the courts from the main Welikda Prison today for hearings.
The suspects were in a holding cell waiting for the prison bus to arrive when they managed to escape.
