Sri Lankan government to present 2010 budget proposals next month

The government says the budget proposals for this year will be presented to the parliament next month.
Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo today Minister Susil Premajayantha said the budget for next year will also be presented to the parliament in this year.
The government is preparing a mini budget for the six months for the period from July to December this year to be presented to the parliament.

Last November the previous parliament passed a Vote-on-Account to cover the first four months of expenditure in 2010 until April 30 as the government was planning to hold general elections before April.

When the Vote-on-Account lapsed at the end of last month, the President ordered the Treasury Secretary to release funds to the ministries to carry out their functions.

The Minister strongly rejected accusations by opposition parties that the government does not want to present a budget. Measures have now been taken to present budget proposals for this year and next year to the parliament, the Minister said.
