Sri Lanka opposition party's reforms committee to seek views from affiliated organizations on proposed reforms

May 24, Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party's reforms committee is to meet next week to seek the views of organizations affiliated with the party on the proposed amendments to its constitution and structure.
Some of the organizations affiliated with the UNP are the National Youth Front, Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya and Lak Vanitha Movement.
Committee Chairman, parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera has told the media yesterday (23) that he, along with other members, would meet the representatives of these organizations on May 31, June 1, 2 and 3, and brief them on the proposed reforms.

Perera has requested these organizations to forward their suggestions in writing to be considered by the Committee.
The Committee presented its report to the Working Committee last week proposing that all the top posts, except those of the General Secretary and the Treasurer, be appointed by a secret ballot unless there was consensus among the party members on any such appointment.
Although the Working Committee has approved these proposals in principle, some UNP MPs who have agitated for urgent reforms to the party had reportedly expressed concerns whether the fresh move by the reforms committee was to delay or undermine the long-awaited reforms.
