Alert sounded along TN coast

An alert was sounded at marina beach here and other coastal parts of Tamil Nadu today, following a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia, that sparked tsunami concern here.
Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea and people living close to the shore asked to move to safer places after the quake struck Aceh in Indonesia, police said.

Traffic was diverted on roads leading to the Marina beach, which was kept out of bounds for people.

In Nagapattinam district, devastated by the December 2004 tsunami that claimed over 6000 lives, District Collector C Munianathan told PTI that fire service, revenue and police departments have been put on alert, but added that there was no need for any panic.

In coastal Kanyakumari town, tourists were evacuated from the beach and Vivekananda Rock Memorial, which is in the sea.
