Security strengthened in Sri Lanka for the New Year

Sri Lanka police has implemented a special security plan in the country during the New Year festive season, the police said.

The police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said they have deployed special police teams and mobile security patrols to cover the Sri Lankan capital and its suburbs.

Vehicle checks have also been expanded to minimize drunk driving and road accidents, the spokesman said.

According to the Excise Commissioner's Department all liquor outlets are closed Tuesday and Wednesday during the New Year. The Department has deployed excise officers to raid the establishments that violate order.

Meanwhile, both Sri Lanka Railways and the Transport Board have taken measures to provide additional train and bus services for the passengers traveling to outstations.
