Expressing his views regarding the polling results from the North and East at the recently concluded presidential elections, Minister of Mass Communication Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said ‘The Tamil people in the North and the East will soon lose the faith that they have in their leaders once they realise the harm that their leaders have done to them in the past and the present. When they realise what their leaders will once again do to them they will soon give up on them.’
Admitting though that the President was unable to surpass the opposition common candidate Sarath Fonseka, who was backed by the Tamil National Alliance, in the North and East results, things would be different in the on coming Parliamentary election Anura Yapa further said.
‘The Tamil leaders have proven that they are not the leaders who love the people, and this was the first proper election that was held in those areas after about thirty years so it will take some time for them to realise that their traditional leaders are not the same any more,’ he added.
The minister further noted that what we must take from the past election is not the fact that who got the highest votes in those areas but that a just and fair election that was unaffected by armed conflict had happened in those areas.
‘I’m happy to see that the people in those areas have shown their willingness to participate in the democratic process as it was shown by the large voter turn out reported from the North and the East it is also a fact that there was a huge turnout in women at the election these are good signs for the democratic future of our country,’ he stressed.
