
Following the collapse of its talks with the UNF to form a common Opposition alliance to contest the forthcoming parliamentary polls, the JVP has decided to go along under the leadership of General (retd) Sarath Fonseka.
Sources told SLW, that JVP would field candidates on the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) ticket. Their symbol will be the “Trophy Cup”.
General Fonseka had been appointed as the leader of the Democratic National Front while Wijitha Herath has been made the General secretary and both these appointments have been duly recognized by the election commissioner.
According to a DNF party member, the general would be contesting the Colombo dist under the Trophy Cup symbol along with Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the JVP. Former chief justice Sarath N Silva will be in the DNF national list. Arjuna Ranathunge has not yet decided from which party he is going to contest for Gampaha.
SLW learns from UNP sources, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP M Wing) led by Mangala Samaraweera, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) led by Rauff Hakeem and the Democratic People’s Front (DPF) led by Mano Ganeshan had agreed to contest the upcoming parliamentary election under the elephant symbol.
