Sub-inspector's murder issue rocks Tamil Nadu assembly

Chennai: The alleged apathy of two Tamil Nadu ministers over extending timely help to a sub-inspector who bled to death after attacked by a gang rocked the state assembly today with ruling DMK members and AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa locked in heated exchange of wordsTrouble erupted as Jayalalithaa made some remarks against the ministers MRK Panneerselvam and TPM Moideen Khan which were subsequently expunged by speaker R Avudaiyappan after vociferous protests from DMK members.

Participating in the debate on the motion to thank the governor for his address to the assembly, Jayalalithaa referred to the incident and charged that the law and order situation in the state was in "complete disarray".

No sooner had she made some remarks against Panneerselvam and Khan, than DMK benches protested, drawing similar response from AIADMK members. As both sides remained unrelenting, speaker R Avudaiyappan expunged Jayalalithaa's remarks.

At this point, law minister Durai Murugan intervened to ask whether Jayalalithaa, then chief minister, had herself saved the victims of stampede at Mahamaham festival in Kumbakonam in 1992 when she was present there.

The two ministers have been facing flak from different quarters for their alleged apathy in shifting SI Vetrivel in time for medical treatment despite being present on the spot.

The ministers have, however, denied the charge of apathy.

Video footage of Vetrivel crying for help with the two ministers standing by evoked a national outcry and Jayalalithaa had already demanded their resignations, accusing them of not helping the policeman.
