'Lanka protected kin of LTTE leaders'

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that the armed forces have protected the families of top LTTE leaders and not killed surrendering Tamil Tigers, as alleged by his rival in the upcoming Presidential election, Gen Sarath Fonseka.

“Some are levelling allegations that those who raised white flags were shot and killed. But the troops rescued Prabhakaran’s parents. Even Thamil Chelvam’s wife and child are in a refugee camp.

The children of the Sea Tiger leader, Soosai, are with his wife,” Rajapaksa said in Kandy on Friday.

FONSEKA HAD JVP TIES WHILE IN SERVICE: The Lankan government has alleged that Fonseka, had secret ties with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) even while he was in service as Chief of Defence Staff.

Minister for Media, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, told newsmen here that when Fonseka was asked by the US government to testify against the Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the issue of war crimes, he had consulted the JVP leader Tilvin Silva on what he should do.

JVP is one of the main sponsors of Fonseka’s candidature in the forthcoming election.
