International poll monitors to watch Sri Lanka presidential elections

Colombo: International poll monitors have been invited to observe Sri Lanka's upcoming presidential elections, Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dishanayaka said today.

Addressing the candidates gathered at the Election Secretariat this morning to submit nominations, the Commissioner said the European Union, United Nations, Commonwealth Union and the Asian Association of Election Authorities (AAEA) have given responded positively.

He instructed the candidates to inform the police and the Election Secretariat prior to opening up campaign offices. The measure was proposed to prevent establishing offices of opposite parties nearby which may lead to clashes between the supporters of those parties.

The Elections Commissioner also added that he will appoint a competent authority to monitor the state media if their conduct is partial in the run-up to the Presidential election.
