Election monitoring network urges Election Commissioner to appoint competent authority

Colombo: A network monitoring polls in Sri Lanka accuses the state media of openly conducting propaganda for the government's candidate at the upcoming presidential election.

At a media briefing held today the Network for Election Monitoring said the state media is exploiting state property and violating media standards and ethics.

The Network said impartial media coverage cannot be expected when the officers in key positions at state media institutions such as Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Independent Television Network, Lake House and Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation have been appointed as ruling party organizers.

The monitoring group urged the Election Commissioner to appoint an independent authority under Clause 104 (A) and (B) of the Constitution to deal with the media procedure during the elections to ensure free and fair coverage by the media institutions.

It further pointed out that not appointing a competent authority soon will harm the objective of a free and fair election.
