Common opposition candidate meets Sri Lanka's Tamil alliance

Colombo: The main opposition candidate for presidency, General Sarath Fonseka met with the members of Tamil National Alliance in a bid to garner the party's support for the upcoming presidential elections next month.

TNA leader Trincomalee District parliamentarian R. Sampanthan and Jaffna district parliamentarian and the general secretary Mavai Senathirajah participated in the discussions.

However, the TNA is yet to decide on which presidential candidate to support at the elections.

TNA leaders earlier met with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Senior Presidential Adviser Basil Rajapaksa but have not committed to supporting any yet.

Reportedly TNA is deeply divided on the issue as the party has chosen not to field a candidate.

However the TNA member, Jaffna District parliamentarian M. K. Shivajilingam, filed his nomination as an independent presidential candidate on December 17. Apparently, the nomination has caused confusion among the constituent parties.

Reportedly Wanni District Parliamentarian Shivanathan Kishore and two others are to support the President.
