A senior UNP parliamentarian told Lanka News Web that information has been received through diplomatic sources about a conspiracy hatched by a Tamil Minister on a Presidential directive to trap Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka in the US on war crimes charges.
General Fonseka is currently in the US visiting his two daughters till November 9 and the conspiracy to trap him on war crimes charges is to be launched during this period. The UNP parliamentarian said the Tamil Minster has organized an internationally based Tamil organization to petition the US courts calling for
the arrest of General Fonskea on war crimes charges.
The parliamentarian further noted that General Fonseka had traveled to the US after ignoring warnings by several members of the diplomatic corps requesting him not to travel to the US following the damning report on war crimes presented to the US Congress. However, General Fonseka had traveled to the US to visit his two daughters whom he has not seen for a long time due to his commitment to ending the war in the country.
JHU sources said that Minister Champika Ranawaka who met with General Fonseka on the 22nd had held lengthy discussions on the US report on war crimes in Sri Lanka and the US government’s decision not to grant permission to General Fonseka to attend a defence summit in Hawaii.
Sources also said Minister Ranawaka had informed the General that the President was unhappy with the news of his intention of entering politics and had therefore decided to keep silent over the decision of the US government not to permit him to attend a conference in Hawaii. However, he had said the President was willing to stand by General Fonseka if the General was willing to cooperate with the President.
Ranawaka had asked General Fonseka to think seriously if he wanted to fight the allegations of war crimes together or to be destroyed by trying to battle it separately.
