Tamil activists seek bail in Lankan embassy ransacking case

Chennai , Oct 12 Activists of a Tamil outfit today moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail apprehending their arrest for allegedly ransacking Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi during a protest.

Puthiya Tamizhagam founder K Krishnasamy and 11 other members of the Tamil Nadu-based organisation today filed a petition in the High Court claiming that they were innocent and being implicated in the case for political reasons.
The applicants claimed that at the time when a group of about 40 demonstrators barged into the High Commission and ransacked the premises on October 2, they were participating in a peaceful dharna at Jantar Mantar, about five km from the premises, in support of three lakh Tamils allegedly confined to refugee camps in the island country.
The High Commission had filed a complaint against the members of Puthiya Tamizhagam"to scare away the supporters of the legitimate demands of the Tamils", they alleged.
Meanwhile, justice K N Basha adjourned the hearing of the petition for tomorrow and directed the public prosecutor to get instructions from the government.
