A protest march and a sathyagraha organized by today (28) Sri Lanka's Marxist party affiliated Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) against what they called police brutality against university students resulted in the temporary closure of Olcott Mawatha in the Fort area of capital Colombo.
The IUSF protestors gathered in Fort after a protest march that commenced opposite the University Grants Commission (UGC). Thousands of protesting university students carried out a sit-down protest against the police.
IUSF Convener Udul Premaratne said the university students would continue with their agitation campaigns until the authorities take firm steps to resolve the issues faced by the students and to bring the culprits behind the death of the Ruhuna University student to justice.
The IUSF organized today's protest against police brutality that allegedly resulted in the death of a third tear student of the Ruhuna University and the assault and arrest of several other university students during the past few days.
